Photocat at Building Green 2018
Building Green is a mix of important ideas and speakers advocating the need and ambition for buildings to be part of the growing green economy. The need for buildings to be “green” is a given. 30 % of all our waste material comes from the building industry and we spend 40 % of our energy consumption on the building processes.
It was a relief to hear a speaker like Anders Lendager, from the Lendager Group, with a clear message that the private sector needs to push innovation if we are to succeed in a green shift. 88 % of buildings are in the private sector and only 12 % in the public. Furthermore, the public sector is incredibly risk averse which makes for a bad cocktail to nurture innovation. The green shift therefore must come through the private sector.
The challenge is tough because in the private sector there is, exactly as in the public sector, a deep-rooted practice of focusing on costs. New technologies tend to cost more in the beginning than traditional solutions. However, Lendager concludes that there is a deep understanding that the private must act responsible and push the green agenda.
For Photocat Building Green was a huge success. We were very busy at our small booth and had difficulties serving all our visitors. The latest addition to our available technology platform is the acoustic ceiling panels. Samples of these panels were exhibited at the fair. It was really a nice experience to demonstrate this new category of materials to the fair visitors. If we are to fully believe in the expectations of the visitors, we are in for a smashing market success with the new product.

Urbanism, Air Quality & NOxOFF
Average values for air pollutants show slight decreases in Sweden. However, with the rate of urbanism an increasing amount of people are exposed to pollution. A recent Swedish study finds that, despite of improved air quality, the populations total exposure to NOx and PM is not changing. The cost is estimated at 76 billion SEK but could be as much as 300 billion SEK. Photocatalysis is a technology that effectively reduces NOx in urban areas using light and NOxOFF is in Denmark calculated to yield societal payback in less than three years and is actively being implemented by Municipalities such as Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.
The study attributes an increased mortality effect for local traffic emissions. And the paper hence find that a higher fraction of deaths related to air pollution occur due to long-term exposure of lower concentration levels. The researchers only look at Sweden, but urbanization is a global mega trend, so we expect the case to be similar across the EU.
In the EU, the air quality standard states that annual mean values for NO2 must be below 40 µg/m3. However, in Sweden, average mean values are below this level yet the country suffers from extennsive societal cost from NO2 pollution. 90 % of the costs associated with NO2 occur due to exposure to values below 20 µg/m3. Maybe its time to reassess what the guideline value should be across the EU?
Growing Awareness for Photocatalysis
As warm up to Building Green 2018 in Forum, Copenhagen, we asked a number of Danish architects about their awareness of active photocatalytic building materials. It turned out that 47 % of the respondents had heard of the technology. A percentage we were happy to see, proving that the technology is beginning to find it’s way to the Danish drawing boards. Within the same survey we also asked the Danish architects how the environment is being included in the projects they are working on. 58 % responded that it is included through the selection of building materials. Combined with the first question, we certainly see architectural interest and awareness in photocatalytic air cleaning building materials.
Among the respondents we drew out a random winner who received a small price. The winner was MSc. Arch. Eng. Micki Aaen Petersen. Micki is a Sustainability Engineer and DGNB Consultant for Urban Districts at the famous Henning Larsen architects. Together with our partner at Building Green Mr. Jon Jensen from Stonetreatment we presented the prize to Micky at the Henning Larsen Office in Vesterbro, Copenhagen.
Micki was very happy for the prize and we had a great get-together discussing the multiple options for using active surfaces. He was especially fond of the Active Concrete Impregnation from Stonetreatment.
For Micki the chance to participate in this survey was perfect because it was all about issues he is working with on a daily basis. There is a huge demand among his clients for sustainability and taking responsibility for the local communities. Hereof questions concerning air pollution and city noise.
We had a good discussion with Micki on these topics and the societal annual cost savings from removing NOx with photocatalysis. He is looking forward to start making calculations on current projects and show it to his clients.
All in all it is clear to us that active air cleaning surfaces, both for indoor and outdoor use, are finding their way into the awareness of all the talented architects in Denmark and abroad. They certainly wish to take a joint responsibility of the challenges we are facing today.

Speaking on Behalf of Clean Air in Cities
On the 12th of June, Henrik Jensen, co-founder and CTO of Photocat, was given 4 minutes to talk about clean air in cities. The message was concise and clear. With photocatalysis, all surfaces can become an active part of a city, it can help the city breathe and help it staying clean for longer. The cost of doing so is low, the impact tremendous. But it requires a willingness to take a chance on something new. We are still over the moon that the Municipality of Frederiksberg is implementing photocatalysis as from 2019. We will continue to work with Municipalities and customers to move this message in our core markets.
From Danish politicians there are three clear requirements for new innovations.
- First it has to solve one of their focus areas, clean air is one of those in Denmark
- Secondly it has to be cost-efficient with a payback of 6 years, NOxOFF is paidback in 3 years.
- Thirdly it should relate to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, photocatalysis is most definitely a positive impact.
How we communicate the relation between photocatalytic building materials and the UN Sustainable Development Goals is something we encourage all our partners to review, we find it highly relevant and would love to discuss it together. Over the next few weeks we will put together some material to help communicate this. Our first approach will be to tailor something for city officials, architects and private companies with a focus on the UN SDGs. Annual Meeting for the Spanish Photocatalytic Association
In Zaragoza the association held its annual meeting on the 21st of June with good attendance. In the photocatalytic world there are quite some excitement in the air as the EU is still struggling with classifying Titaniumdioxide.
But for Photocat this meeting was particular interesting because we have tested a series of products and made the first projects in Spain become real. First we had a very good lecture given by our very own Felicidad Rodriguez. She talked on what Photocatalysis can do for the modern smartcity. She also gave examples on the socioeconomic values created by Photocatalysis. The presentation was received with great applaus.
The first project that we can see on a major scale is the 14.000 SQM pedestrian tiles to be installed in the municipalty of Albacete. The manufacturer La Roda is especially known for its very high quality tiles. Now also available with NOxOFF.

Primary School Students Visit Photocat A/S
Photocat had the pleasure of hosting three sixth grade students from Hampelandsskolen. The students were out visiting companies in the Municipality in order to gain perspective on various career paths. Photocat had the fortune of having three young ladies looking at Photocat as to what they do and understand what kind of educational backgrounds you need to work and commit to inorder to Improve the Air We Breathe
The three ladies interviewed members of Photocat to understand what kind of education the members of the Photocat team had and what the different members were actually doing during the day. It is always good fun to hear other colleagues explain what they are using their time on. But more important with modern school planning it has become increasingly more important to be focused on what mature life should offer.
From the Photocat team it was a delight to get to hear what the young ones are thinking about pollution and how to deal with it. There is no doubt that if the young ones decided we would have more environmental responsibility at the individual level. These school students are fully aware about how to avoid too much pollution. They are also willing to use all new technologies to help us get a better world. Particularly something like NOx pollution, a pollution form that shortens life expectancy.
But the crown jevel of the 2 day visit was when the students went to Bønnelyckes plads to test the Photocat technology on a surface treated with Photocat Garden October 2014. The measurement went very well and it was a good learning to have the pupils trying to explain.
